HOMELESSNESS: 2001 Census Results

In 2001 MASW conducted a census of homeless shelters in Missouri for the coldest day of the year, January 2, and a day in early summer, June 25. This was the fifth census in a series, the others being in 1993, 1994, 1996, and 1998.

The report on the 2001 Census is divided geographically into six regions and provides estimates of sub-populations, sources of funding for shelters, kinds of services provided by each shelter, and other information. Tom Gould, MPA, University of Missouri, Kansas City, is the Principle Investigator for the report.

This 2001 Census was undertaken with a contract with the Missouri Housing Development Commission (MHDC) and MASW. It has been and will be used by the Missouri Department of Economic Development as part of its "Consolidated Plan" to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as part of its documentation that justifies federal funding for homeless services in the state. The data may also be used by homeless service providers to justify grant requests to private and governmental funding sources.
